As Ukraine Goes, So Goes the World
Thoughts on propaganda, violence, and democracy
Featuring Timothy Snyder, Richard C. Levin Professor of History and Global Affairs at Yale University and a permanent fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna
Synopsis: The war in Ukraine invites us to reopen certain fundamental conceptual and moral questions. The notion of genocide for example rests on the assumption that there are peoples; those who plan genocide deny that peoples exist. The notion of democracy also assumes the existence of a people as well as its desire to rule. Since 1989 it has been assumed that democracy can rest on neutral structural foundations. The rise of militaristic Russia, and especially Ukrainian self-defense, recalls an earlier tradition which associated democracy with ethical engagement and struggle. Professor Snyder will discuss these and other questions on the war in Ukraine.
